close your eyes in a dark room and give it a moment. what you see is not black. it's a color — lighter than black, faintly luminous, with no apparent source. it doesn't fade as your eyes adjust. it simply is. this is eigengrau. the word is german: own gray, intrinsic gray. the color you make in the absence of light.

gustav theodor fechner named it in the nineteenth century. he was trying to build a science of sensation — to measure how much physical stimulus maps to how much perceived experience. eigengrau was the floor of that inquiry. not the baseline of zero, not the absence of experience, but the minimum threshold: the thing the visual system generates when nothing is coming in.

photoreceptors don't go silent in darkness. they fire stochastically — random, signalless, thermal noise in a wet circuit. your visual cortex receives these firings and processes them as dim illumination. there is no functional difference, at the neural level, between eigengrau and a very faint actual light. they produce the same cortical response. one of them has a source.

the color has an approximate hex. #16161d, in common citation — but the range is the point: somewhere between #16161d and #474747 depending on the study, the person, and how long they've been in the dark. it changes. the longer you stay in darkness, the more your eyes adapt — rods reach full sensitivity, the threshold lowers — and eigengrau brightens, paradoxically. the more accustomed you become to nothing, the more it has to show you.

which means: you cannot experience true darkness. what you experience as darkness is the color of your own neural noise. you are always, in the absence of light, looking at something. it just happens to be yourself.

the background on this page started at #0D0810. it has been moving toward eigengrau since you arrived — slowly, over the course of reading this. by now it may be slightly different than when you started, or it may not be. the shift is slow enough that the visual system adapts around it. you may not be able to see the change from inside it.

that's not a problem with the method. that's the method.
